KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — On Saturday, a devastating Russian missile strike on a five-story residential building in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals. Additionally, 10 others were reported injured, including three children. This incident sparked widespread condemnation from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who urged for a robust international response to the escalating violence.
President Zelenskyy disclosed that Russia launched a significant assault overnight, firing 29 missiles and deploying 480 drones. These attacks specifically targeted energy facilities in Kyiv and other central regions of Ukraine, causing damage in at least seven locations throughout the country. Preliminary analyses indicate that Ukrainian air defense systems successfully intercepted 19 missiles and 453 drones, while recording hits from nine missiles and 26 attacking drones across 22 sites.
In Kharkiv, emergency responders were actively searching through the rubble for survivors following the strike. The situation was compounded by reports from the Kyiv region, where debris from the attacks resulted in damage across three districts. Furthermore, the southern Odesa region mobilized 80 firefighters to tackle significant fires that erupted at critical infrastructure facilities due to drone strikes. The Ukrainian state rail operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, reported necessary alterations to various train routes in the center-west of the country as a result of damage to the rail infrastructure.
Zelenskyy emphasized the urgent need for a global response to what he described as "savage strikes" against civilian life, asserting that Russia continues its campaign to obliterate Ukraine’s residential and critical infrastructure. He called for sustained support, particularly from the European Union, to enhance the safety of Ukrainian citizens. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude toward those who are contributing to strengthen the country's defense.
Since the onset of the conflict over four years ago, Russia has extensively employed Iranian-designed Shahed drones in its operations against Ukraine, launching tens of thousands during this period. The Russian government has also initiated large-scale domestic production of these drones, deploying hundreds in a single night — a volume surpassing that used in certain entire months in 2024.
In parallel, Iran has retaliated against US-Israeli airstrikes by launching similar drones against various nations in the Middle East. Zelenskyy also revealed that he received a request for support from the U.S. aimed at defending against Iranian drones in the Middle East, which he addressed by ordering the provision of necessary equipment along with the deployment of Ukrainian specialists.
The ongoing war in the Middle East has diverted international focus from the significant conflict in Europe, leading to the postponement of a new round of U.S.-brokered negotiations between Russia and Ukraine that were scheduled for the upcoming week. This shift in attention highlights the complexities and evolving nature of geopolitical tensions as both regions grapple with their respective crises.
