"Over 1.6 Million Illegal Cigarettes Seized"

Police in Cape Breton seized a more than a million unstamped cigarettes during a wellness check

Police in Cape Breton made a significant discovery during a wellness check on Saturday, leading to the seizure of over a million unstamped cigarettes. The incident unfolded early in the morning around 7 a.m. when an officer from Northeast Traffic Services-Cape Breton (NETS-CB) spotted an unresponsive individual in the front seat of a Mercedes van parked at a gas station located on Highway 125 near Membertou.

On noticing the person slumped over, the officer approached the vehicle to check on their welfare. However, upon inspection, the officer discovered illegal contraband present in the cab of the van, prompting the immediate arrest of the driver. Subsequent searches conducted on the vehicle revealed a staggering stash of illegal tobacco, with estimates indicating approximately 160 cases containing around 1.6 million unstamped cigarettes.

The driver was identified as a 51-year-old woman hailing from Peterborough, Ontario. Following the arrest, she was released under conditions pending legal proceedings. The individual is expected to face charges in June, as authorities work to address the illegal circulation of untaxed tobacco products in the region.

NETS-CB, the specialized unit involved in this operation, consists of officers from both the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Cape Breton Regional Police Service. This collaboration aims to enhance law enforcement capabilities in the area, particularly in combating illegal activities related to drug and tobacco trafficking.

This incident highlights the persistent issue of illegal tobacco trade in Canada, which not only poses legal challenges but also raises public health concerns. The discovery of such a significant quantity of unstamped cigarettes emphasizes the need for continued vigilance by law enforcement agencies in addressing contraband activity.

As the case progresses towards the court date set for June, more details surrounding the operation and potential implications for the illegal tobacco market may emerge. The enforcement efforts by NETS-CB demonstrate the commitment of local and federal authorities to maintain the integrity of legal markets and protect public interests.
