"Progress Made on Southern California Springs Fire"

RIVERSIDE, Calif

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) – Crews made significant progress on Saturday in their battle against a smoky wildfire in Southern California, known as the Springs Fire, which erupted on Friday and led to mandatory evacuation orders for nearby residents.

The Springs Fire has spread across approximately 6.3 square miles (about 16 square kilometers) in Riverside County, located roughly 64 miles (103 kilometers) east of Los Angeles. As of Saturday, the fire is reported to be at least 45% contained, a noticeable improvement from the 25% containment noted on Friday, according to a spokesperson from the Riverside County Fire Department.

Initial predictions on Saturday indicated wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph (72 kph). However, Terra Fernandez, a public safety information specialist for the Riverside County Fire Department, indicated that the winds had "dissipated a bit" since Friday, which has aided the firefighting efforts. "We’re feeling confident. The winds have died down so it’s assisting us in making more progress," Fernandez stated.

The reduction in wind intensity has facilitated firefighters' ability to build and strengthen containment lines around the fire's perimeter. Natural equestrian trails surrounding many structures have also provided access for fire crews, further aiding in their efforts. Fernandez noted that increasing humidity levels expected later in the evening would contribute positively to firefighting operations.

So far, the fire has not caused any damage to structures or properties, which is a relief for residents in affected areas. Fire crews began early Saturday by employing aerial tactics to drop water and fire retardant strategically across the fire's expanse. Currently, about 260 personnel are engaged in combating the blaze, including crew members from various regions who are working to establish and reinforce containment lines while laying hoses to control the fire's spread.

While less than a dozen zones in Riverside County remain under mandatory evacuation orders, evacuation warnings in other areas have been lifted. The exact number of households affected by the evacuation orders has yet to be determined. The fire is located in a densely populated unincorporated area of Riverside County that serves as a recreational zone near the city of Moreno Valley, which has an approximate population of 200,000 residents.

The cause of the Springs Fire is still under investigation, and officials are working diligently to understand the circumstances that led to its outbreak. Firefighters remain focused on containing the fire and ensuring the safety of the surrounding community as they continue their efforts into the weekend.
