ENID, Okla. (AP) — A powerful tornado struck Oklahoma on Thursday, significantly impacting the rural community near Vance Air Force Base. The severe weather system tore off roofs from buildings, toppled power poles, and prompted emergency crews to respond quickly to the affected areas.
The confirmed tornado traversed parts of Enid, a city with a population of approximately 50,000 residents located near the northern border of Oklahoma. Eyewitness videos circulating online showed a rapidly rotating column of air making contact with the ground, alongside scenes of extensively damaged homes.
As of the latest reports, there have been no fatalities and only minor injuries resulting from the tornado's wrath, according to the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office. In the aftermath, authorities are going door-to-door in several neighborhoods, ensuring the safety and well-being of residents.
The tornado also caused disruptions at Vance Air Force Base, although the specific extent of the damage remains unclear. The base's official social media channels indicated that officials are currently conducting accountability procedures to confirm that all personnel are safe and accounted for.
Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt expressed his concern for the community, stating, “Please join me in praying for the Enid community, which has been severely impacted by tonight’s tornado.” His message reflects both empathy and solidarity with those affected by the natural disaster.
Enid Police Department spokesperson Cass Rains shared early accounts of people potentially trapped in their homes, highlighting the extensive damage that had already been reported. Garfield County, which encompasses Vance Air Force Base, is situated approximately 80 miles (129 kilometers) north of Oklahoma City, an area often prone to such severe weather phenomena.
Residents of Enid now face the daunting task of recovery and rebuilding. Community organizations and local authorities are expected to coordinate relief efforts, providing necessary aid to those who have lost their homes or have been otherwise affected by this devastating event.
The situation remains fluid as emergency services continue to respond and assess the damage. Local and state officials are likely to provide further updates as more information becomes available, particularly concerning any additional injuries and the full scope of the tornado's impact on structures and infrastructure in the region.
