"Bolsonaro's Home Searched; No Weapons Found"

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazil’s federal police on Wednesday searched the home of convicted former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for weapons and ammunition, but found nothing, a lawyer for Bolsonaro said on X

On Wednesday, Brazil's federal police conducted a search at the residence of convicted former President Jair Bolsonaro, looking for weapons and ammunition. According to Bolsonaro's lawyer, João Henrique Nascimento de Freitas, no items were found during the search. This operation occurs amidst Bolsonaro's ongoing legal troubles and house arrest in Brasilia, where he is serving a 27-year sentence for attempting a coup following his electoral defeat in 2022 to current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The federal police initiated the search following a court order linked to discrepancies in the number of firearms legally registered under Bolsonaro’s name versus those actually transferred to the authorities. This order was issued by Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Notably, a firearm owned by Bolsonaro was recently discovered in the possession of a military officer during a checkpoint search.

Despite these findings, Justice De Moraes granted Bolsonaro permission to remain under house arrest, even after the incident regarding the firearm. Bolsonaro, who began serving his sentence in November after being convicted in September, has been granted house arrest since March due to health concerns.

The international community has closely monitored Bolsonaro's trial, especially following actions taken by U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump notably imposed a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods citing a “witch hunt” aimed at his ally, Bolsonaro. Although many of these tariffs were eventually lifted, the Trump administration has recently signaled potential reinstatement of tariffs due to claims of unfair commercial practices, complicating U.S.-Brazil trade relations despite the U.S. enjoying a considerable trade surplus with Brazil.

Further complicating the Bolsonaro family’s situation, one of his sons, Eduardo, faced legal consequences this year for illegally lobbying the U.S. government to interfere with proceedings against his father. The chain of events underscores the ongoing tension within Brazilian politics as well as the international implications stemming from Bolsonaro’s controversial actions and the broader geopolitical dynamics at play.

In summary, Bolsonaro’s legal entanglements have drawn significant attention, and the recent search of his home by federal police is just one chapter in a larger narrative of political upheaval and judicial scrutiny in Brazil.
