"Beware: Scammers Impersonating CAFC Officials!"

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) says criminals are using their name as part of various scams to try and defraud people out of their money

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) has issued a warning regarding an alarming rise in scams where criminals are impersonating their organization. This highlights the growing trend of fraudsters attempting to deceive individuals into parting with their money while using the CAFC's name.

CAFC officials report an increasing number of incidents where fraudsters contact victims via phone, email, or social media, falsely claiming to be tied to an ongoing investigation. These impersonators often present themselves as investigators from reputable institutions, such as banks or major credit card companies. They typically assert that there are unauthorized transactions on the victim's account or that their banking information might have been compromised.

In these scams, fraudsters go to great lengths to create a façade of legitimacy. They may claim to represent the CAFC, law enforcement, or other government entities and frequently utilize fake documents that bear the CAFC's logo. Victims receive correspondence that looks official, and they are sometimes instructed to provide sensitive information, such as debit or credit card details, or to transfer funds to a so-called "safe" account supposedly to assist in the investigation.

CAFC officials emphasize a critical point: if an individual is asked to pay money to reclaim funds they have already lost, it is undoubtedly a scam. They urge the public to be vigilant and aware of these fraudulent practices.

Furthermore, the CAFC has clarified that neither their organization nor law enforcement will ever solicit customers to transfer money, request payments, or ask for remote access to their personal computers or mobile devices. Additionally, they will never ask for banking information or passwords. If someone receives a call claiming to be from their bank or the CAFC, it is advisable to hang up immediately and reach out to their financial institution directly to verify the legitimacy of the request.

This advisory from the CAFC serves to inform and protect the public from these impersonation scams. It is evident that fraudsters are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their techniques, making it crucial for individuals to remain cautious. Awareness and education are vital in combating these fraudulent activities and safeguarding personal and financial information.
